Environment
Overview of the sector
  • 1st region in France to apply its Climate Energy Plan (2007-2013)
  • A reserve of 2.3 million m3/year of industrial wood and wood for energy transformation
  • An under-used resource - solar and wind power

Wind power

Wind map of Burgundy: a map of potential wind power sites has been created by the Burgundy Regional Council and the ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency)

    • 85 potential wind farm sites have been identified
    • 8 ZDE (Wind power development areas) have been approved and 3 more ZDE are being studied
    • 174MW approved and 400 MW in the pipeline – Eurobserv’er 2009

The relevant industrial know-how for wind farms is here in Burgundy:

    • Construction of masts (Céole, SIAG)
    • Manufacture of directional bearings (SKF)
    • Manufacture of industrial disc brakes (Stromag)
    • Manufacture of special cables (Prysmian)
    • Manufacture of metallic structures, boilerwork, pipework
    • Transporters specialising in large or heavy loads (Cayon, Rave, Couturier, Altead…)

An important synergy with the regional metal and plastics industries.

Buildings for tomorrow

Under the impulsion of the Burgundy Regional Council and the presence of numerous small businesses, the eco-construction industry is developing. Three requests for proposals launched since 2006, 142 successful candidates: 180,000 m² low-energy, passive or positive-energy buildings under conception or realisation, 290 new or renovated buildings (1250 social housing and 83 tertiary buildings).

    • One of the successes, The Elithis tower – 1st positive energy office structure in France Cliquez ici pour agrandir

The industry relies on the expansion of wood for construction, benefitting from a major source of raw material in Burgundy:

    • 4th region in France in terms of volume of standing wood
    • 700,000 m3 of resinous construction timber cut in 2007 – Agreste 2009
    • Industrial manufacturers of wooden construction elements (Fargeot-Arbonis, POBI, Isoroy, SPTP…)
    • More than 130 technical research departments, wood architects and construction companies – Census Aprovalbois 2009

Burgundy is one of the 5 pioneer regions supporting the creation of the label BBC Effinergie – Low Consumption Buildings.

Wood for Energy

A resource still under exploited:

    • Using only the waste left from forestry operations, the estimated potential source for Burgundy is 429 ktep / year – IFN ADEME 2004
    • Burgundy has an annual reserve of 2.3 million m3 of industrial wood and wood for energy out of a total of 18 million m3 for the whole of France – Cemagref October 2007

78 installers of wood burning boilers approved by Qualibois - Qualit’EnR 2009

210 collective and industrial heating systems documented in 2008 - Aprovalbois 2009

Inaugurated in 2006, the largest heating system in France at Echalot in the Côte d’Or. A capacity of 5MW, it burns about 5000 tons of straw and 800 tons of wood, all from neighbouring farms and woodyards.

4 rural centres of excellence dedicated to the use of wood: Autunois-Morvan, La Roche en Brénil, Charitois region and La Machine.
